ALASKA TRADITIONAL MUSIC CAMP Mandolin Classes 2009 Mandolin I (Brett Jokela) – This basic mandolin class is tailored toward new players or players new to the mandolin. We will focus on fundamental technique, tone development, hand position, open two-finger chords, and scales common to traditional music. We will also explore some closed "chop" chord shapes and apply elementary theory in learning melody and accompaniment for standard tunes from the folk repertoire. We will discuss tablature and standard notation, but you need not be fluent in either to successfully partake in the class. Irish Mandolin/Tenor Banjo I & II (Eamon O’Leary) – These two different skill level classes will seek to accommodate those who are just starting out as well as those looking to expand their repertoires on tenor banjo or mandolin. We’ll cover as many different types of tunes as time allow, with particular emphasis on rhythm, phrasing and ornamentations. Mandolin Technique II/III (Caleb Klauder) – I will explore tone options and focus on tempo relevant to dance music. I will teach melody playing, both solo and harmony. We will explore songs and backup for songs. I will focus on technique and share ways to get the most sound out of the mandolin. I will use songs to keep all of the new ideas relevant and to keep the class musical. Olditme Mandolin (Caleb Klauder) – My main goal is to help students discover the joys of melody playing. I will teach fiddle tunes on the mandolin and focus on the nuances of picking as related to fiddle bowing. I will demonstrate the options for rhythm playing and backup. Tunes wll be taught aurally, there will be no sheet music. Students should have a good feel for the keys of G and A. As the week progresses, I will introduce tunes in the keys of C, D, and F. Bluegrass Mandolin (Tim May) – This intermediate class will teach how to play both vocal and instrumental bluegrass songs, play back- up and "kick-offs," and improve your improvisational skills.
